Sri Lanka Teachers Association President Priyanth Fernando stated that there are currently more than three thousand teacher vacancies in the North Central Province.
In this regard, all measures have been taken to incorporate 2100 graduate teachers under the North Central Provincial Public Service Order and a recommendation has been made for a gazette notification. He further stated that since it is the election season, the Ministry of Education has put this on hold for the time being.
This year, more than 500 teachers from the North Central Province have applied to be transferred to other provinces, and they have completed five years of service, and if they are also transferred, the teacher shortage will increase further, he added.
Sri Lanka Teachers’ Union President Priyanthu Fernando further stated that there is a shortage of teachers for essential core subjects in the North Central Province and that if this is not addressed soon and these teacher vacancies continue to exist, the educational situation in the North Central Province will be greatly affected.
